Default MySQL authentication errors with 4.1

Many applications that connect to MySQL databases experience problems authenticating after upgrading to MySQL 4.1 or later.

This is due to a new password hashing algorithm introduced with MySQL 4.1. Password Hashing in MySQL 4.1

An easy fix to allow these applications to connect again is to convert the password hash in the mysql.user table back to the old scheme.

The mysqladmin command line tool can help. To convert a new style password hash to the old style:
    mysqladmin -u username -p old-password 'thepassword'

You will be prompted for 'username's password, and 'thepassword' must be specified on the command line as well.
